General

The following scorecard, found in my papers during an enormous spring clean, details a match between Calverley Parish and Guiseley Parish, which took place in Menston on 23 July 1888, with 12 players a side.

The scorecards were written in 19th century cursive script and were, occasionally, not too clear. Consequently, apologies to anyone who may recognise a gross mis-spelling of a distant relative`s name.

If so, please let me know and I will correct it.

Calverley Parish batted first.

You have to wonder whether the wicket would have passed a modern-day Ground Inspection !!
*************

Mick Bourne of Leeds, a well-known local Cricket historian, has provided the following extra information about the scorecard above.

E. Peate would be Ted Peate, former Yeadon professional and Yorkshire and England bowler - hence his eight wickets. M.(Matt) Myers was most likely the professional who had played for Yeadon in the 1870s and who is buried in Yeadon cemetery. I have not yet been able to identify the leading players for the Calverley side, the parish of which extended into the Pudsey area and as far as Idle.
